{"id":2700,"date":"2023-11-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-27T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/talent-web.applyflow.site\/four-tips-for-a-successful-career-in-accounting\/"},"modified":"2023-11-27T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-11-27T00:00:00","slug":"four-tips-for-a-successful-career-in-accounting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.talentweb.com.au\/four-tips-for-a-successful-career-in-accounting\/","title":{"rendered":"FOUR TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN ACCOUNTING"},"content":{"rendered":"<article>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0It will come as no surprise that \u2013 like so many industries \u2013 a career in accounting is not immune from a rapidly developing technological and technical environment which is making it even harder to map a the \u201cperfect\u201d career path <a href=\"https:\/\/au.linkedin.com\/in\/edkirby\">Ed Kirby<\/a>\u00a0and I sat down this afternoon and discussed amongst other things (England\u2019s 2018 Six Nations tournament for one) \u201cWith all of this change what are the fundamentals that HAVEN\u2019T changed and which will ensure your success in the accounting field\u201d.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This list is by no means exhaustive but it is our initial thoughts and captures a few things you really need to think about;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>ENGAGE WITH THE BUSINESS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Get out of your seat. Get out there and absorb the sales floor, the manufacturing plant, the farm, the trading floor, the oil pipeline. Use the technology and ask questions from other people in their business. What are their challenges and how can your work add value to them? What to the \u201cnumbers\u201d mean to the GM of Client Services? It doesn\u2019t matter what level you are at; if you don\u2019t know business there is no point in knowing accounting.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>MAINTAIN YOUR TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Don\u2019t become a jack of all trades and a master of none. In order to progress you need to stay up to date with legislative and regulatory changes and you need to be able to understand the detail. If you don\u2019t know how a technical set of accounts are pulled together \u201cthese days\u201d then you don\u2019t know what questions to ask. Don\u2019t lose that core skill set that you developed at the start.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>CARE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If you don\u2019t like accounting then do something else. If you do like it then get immersed in your profession. Get your professional qualifications and do your CPD. You can\u2019t say you are a professional and then get half wet \u2013 make an effort to be better than you were yesterday.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>BE A GOOD #2 AND DEVELOP A GOOD #2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This isn\u2019t revolutionary I know but \u2013 put simply \u2013 support and help your leader and support and develop the person below you. Being a good team mate means avoiding undermining people, doing crap work for them or holding people back.
